DC Society of Certified Public Managers

Privacy Policy


This policy addresses DC Society of Certified Public Managers members’ and web site visitors’ privacy on two levels: as a member of the Society and the American Academy of CPMs, and as a visitor to this web site. In addition to the policies stated here, Society members are also protected by the AACPM Privacy Policy with regard to information that is subject to handling at both the Society and Academy levels.

The DC Society of Certified Public Manager’s respects the privacy of visitors to its web site. In brief, we will not knowingly collect and store personal information without your knowledge, and we will not request personal information unless we need to do so in order to serve our members and visitors, or we are required to do so by law. Our policy is perhaps best explained by providing examples of what we do and do not collect in terms of information and for what purposes it is collected.

We do not collect personally identifying information from visitors merely reading our web site.

We do not use “cookies” to obtain personal information our web site or track visitors beyond the confines of our web site. However, some specific application programs may utilize cookies or session identifiers to enable you to use the applications properly during the course of a visit to our web site. We in no way track or analyze those identifiers in order to determine personal identity or actions.

We do ask you to provide your name and some additional information for specific services where such information is required to protect your security, such as your login ID to the site’s web forum.

We do require personal information on your membership application, but this information is not stored online or accessible by anyone other than Society officers and specifically designated third parties that provide services to you. For example, in order to provide you with Governing Magazine and The Pubic Manager Journal, we will provide those organizations with the information from your membership form required to fulfill your subscription request.

We will not provide or sell our membership information to third parties that do not have a specific affiliation with the Society and a specific need for the information, such as providing you with a membership benefit.

If you choose to pay for your membership by credit card, we will collect certain verifying information required to ensure the integrity and security of the financial transaction, but that information will not be stored online or used for any other purpose.

We will use your e-mail address to send you occasional notices of Society events and services. We will never sell e-mail address lists or provide them to others.

It should be noted that, like virtually all web sites, our systems do collect some information about each visitor’s Internet Protocol (IP) address, type of browser used, the date and time of the visit, and similar abstract statistical data. We do not collect this information in conjunction with any personal identity information. We use this information for statistical reporting purposes to obtain aggregate reports on the web site’s usage, such as the number of visitors per month, what pages were viewed, and so on. This data is used to maintain and improve the web site.
