New Askew Awards Winners
Congratulations are due the recent recipients of the AACPM / CPM Society Askew Awards. The Askew Awards are presented by local CPM Societies throughout the country in conjunction with the American Academy of Certified Public Managers to Certified Public Managers students based on their class project papers. During the September, 2005 National CPM Conference in New Hampshire, Askew Awards were presented to individuals or project teams representing 18 CPM Societies, including the DC Society. The Askew awards are presented to CPM students from the CPM programs in the regions of local CPM Societies. Project abstracts for the recent award winning projects are in our library section, as are some of the project reports.
The AACPM award is intended to acknowledge efforts of those who have demonstrated exemplary work in the completion of their CPM projects as part of the CPM Program. As stated on the medallion itself, the awards are given “For the utilization of management practices exemplifying the philosophy of the American Academy of Certified Public Managers in the completion of an exceptional curriculum project.” The criteria for selection includes that the project should:
- Be innovative in its approach.
- Demonstrate an improvement in quality within the work unit as a result of the project.
- Show cost savings of the result of the implementation of the project.
- Be an outstanding demonstration of CPM principles.
Locally, in 2004, Ms. Jennifer Black (PEMM Class 16) of the DC Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs received an Askew award for her project paper, "Training Matters," which examined training programs within the DC Government and in comparison to other state and local governments. Ms. Black's award winning paper is currently being considered for publication. Jennifer's paper can be found in our library section. A team project from DC CPM Class 17 received an award in 2005.
The local 2005 DC Askew was presented to a project team from PEMM Class 17, Samuel Barringtine, Jr., Adrienne Chevelle Glymph, and Carole R. Lee, who teamed up to do their class project and received the award for their paper "Healthpro DC: A health promotion and Wellness Program for District of Columbia Employees." Healthpro DC, is a study to develop a business case for the implementation of a health promotion and wellness program in the DC Government for the benefit of employees and improvement of productivity. In their absence, the award was accepted at the National Conference on behalf of the DC team by the Society's President and Secretary, Danny Weiss and Deborah Crain, respectively.
